Learning Obedience
(week 07/04)

Hebrews 5:8-9 NKJV: though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.

Here, we are told that the Lord Jesus learned obedience by the things which He suffered.

What were these things and how did He learn obedience from them?

To understand what these things were we need to see that, though Jesus was God’s son and so had the divine nature in Him: spirit, soul and body, obedience was not automatic.

There were pressures from the Satanic nature in the air, coming against His mind and flesh to try to make Him disobey God.

Ephesians 2:2-3 NKJV: in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

It was these pressures that He suffered and had to learn from the Holy Spirit using the Word of God and prayer to overcome them:

Hebrews 4:15-16 NKJV: For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Hebrews 5:7 NKJV: who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,

By activating the law of the Spirit of life that kept Him above the law of sin and death Christ learned and walked in constant obedience to God.

Romans 8:2 KJV: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

To activate the law of the Spirit of life you:

1. Draw life from God using the name of Jesus and the Word of God.

For example you say ‘In Jesus name I have life’ (John 20.31)

2. Confess the Word of God to obey God.

For example you say ‘ I am willing and obedient and I eat the good of the land’ (Is. 1.18)

3. Pray in tongues to release the grace and mercy of God through the High priestly ministry of Christ that will enable you to supernaturally do the Word of God.

Jude 20-21 NKJV: But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

By practicing this daily to walk in the fear of God and in the love of God you will, like Jesus, learn obedience by the suffering and overcoming of temptations and trials and gradually become perfect as Jesus was perfect.

1 John 2:5-6 NKJV: But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

John 14:12 NKJV: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
